About the Speaker:

Susan Schreibman is Professor of Digital Humanities and Director of An Foras Feasa, the Humanities Research Institute, at Maynooth University.  Dr Schreibman has published and lectured widely in digital humanities and Irish poetic modernism. Her current digital projects include Letters of 1916 and Contested Memories: The Battle of Mount Street Bridge.  Her publications include A New Companion to Digital Humanities (2015), A Companion to Digital Literary Studies (2008). She is the founding Editor of the peer-reviewed Journal of the Text Encoding Initiative and is a member of the Board of the National Library of Ireland.

About the topic:

Ireland is in the last stages of a year-long re-evaluation of the political, social, and cultural of the Easter Rising of 1916. I will speak about two digital projects I have been involved with over the past few years. The first, Letters of 1916 http://letters1916.ie is a public humanities project that is has collected thousands of letters from public institutions and private collections about Ireland between November 1915-October 1916. Contested Memories: The Battle of Mount Street Bridge http://mountstreet1916.ie is a virtual world reconstruction of a key engagement on the Wednesday of the week of the Easter Rising. By spatially and temporally reconstructing the battlefield as it was in 1916, coupled with a thorough review of extant documentary sources, the first time in 100 years, we were able to intervene in debates about the event.
