In a mere fifty years, awesome technological advancements have transformed the video gaming landscape beyond belief, developing from a niche activity to a mainstream worldwide phenomenon. Video game localisation has consequently become increasingly critical in the industrial work flow, as more and more games are designed for players of different cultural and linguistic backgrounds in the international market. However, game localisation is very often an after-thought for game developers, indie game designers in particular. Localisation is only considered when a game has achieved some local success. Problems then occur if a game is not designed in a localisable way from the very beginning. Technical issues, legal matters, and social-cultural considerations may become major obstacles in bringing a game into another market. Therefore, it is of great importance to design a game that is localisable from the early development stage. This presentation will provide an overview on the workflow of game localisation and discuss critical issues. It aims to equip future game translators with some knowledge on the procedures and challenges of localising a game for the global market.
