Introduction

——

When considering the term “intercultural”, it is impossible to deny its complexity. Intercultural communication has typically been defined as communication between individuals from different national cultures. However, the field has grown considerably since its early beginnings. In the first systematic review of intercultural communication theories theInternational and Intercultural Communication Annual, a group of researchers theorized about the interpersonal communication between people from different cultures. These initial theories were followed up in 1988 in a follow-up publication by empirical support and research on communication between people from different cultures. This early intercultural communication theory building, supported by works by Hall, Trager, and others, laid the groundwork for the discipline. However, the discipline has changed. Today intercultural communication includes more theories than ever before, an increasing focus on studying the intercultural, and an increasing debate as to what is “intercultural”. To this end, today I would like to present an overview of the state of the discipline. The purpose of this discussion is three-fold: first, I will review where we have been; second I will discuss where we are going, and third I will identify key issues, challenges, and opportunities in intercultural communication. Throughout my talk today, I will focus my attention on the internationalization of intercultural communication.
